Why Is the SSA Is Phasing Out Paper Checks?
The transition to electronic payments provides several advantages:
Speed and efficiency. Electronic deposits are faster and ensure funds are available on time each month.
Cost savings. The U.S. Department of the Treasury, Bureau of the Fiscal Service found that issuing paper checks costs more than triple what it costs to send an electronic payment. Moving away from paper helps save the federal government millions of dollars annually.
Enhanced security. Paper checks are 16 times more likely to be lost or stolen compared to electronic payments, according to research by the Bureau. Switching to direct deposit or a debit card offers greater protection against fraud.
How Do I Switch to Electronic Payments?
Beneficiaries have two safe and convenient options for receiving Social Security payments electronically:
- Direct Deposit: Have your benefits sent directly into your checking or savings account. Funds are available without delay each month.
- Direct Express® Debit Card: If you don’t have a bank account, this prepaid debit card is designed for federal benefit payments, giving you secure access to your funds.
You can update your payment method through your mySocialSecurity account or visiting the Treasury’s GoDirect site.
How Is the SSA Is Notifying Beneficiaries?
The SSA is notifying all paper check recipients in advance. Notices will be mailed, and inserts with step-by-step instructions are included with each check. In addition, SSA staff are available to provide guidance and answer questions about making the transition.
